WHADITW Mentioned in Association Trends

Jill Cornish, publisher of Association Trends, mentioned our book in her latest editorial (link goes behind a paywall). Here is what she wrote:

WE HAVE ALWAYS DONE IT THAT WAY. How many times have you heard that when suggesting to the staff or the board that a change is needed? Assns, in general, are adverse to change. They hold on to programs, policies and formats far longer than necessary or advisable. A new book, 101 things about assns we must change, published by the appropriately named LuLu Enterprises, suggests that assn execs must change how they think, lead, manage, execute, work together, and involve others. Written by Jeff De Cagna, CAE, EdD, C. David Gammel, CAE, Jamie Notter, Mickie Rops, CAE, and Amy Smith (though none of the CAE designations were included in the authors’ list), the book will probably be an “uncomfortable read” for many of you. Sacred programs of the assn community are challenged; the authors clearly believe assns have a LOT of work to do.

Thanks Jill!

Purple Cow Publishing

Seth Godin provides a nice summary of how he self published Purple Cow and marketed it in a remarkable way. I particularly love the story about International Paper forcing edits on his milk carton design before they would print it! No dissing the milk products industry, thank you very much Mr. Marketing Smarty Pants. :)

I share this here since we self published our book, We Have Always Done It That Way, and gave away many copies to get people talking about it. This works surprisingly well! We didn’t have a milk carton, however.

ASAE Book Club

We are excited that the book will be the topic of ASAE & The Center’s Professional Development Learning Community Book Club (try making THAT into an acronym). It’s the first book for this new book club, which is part of ASAE & The Center’s online learning community for people in the Professional Development area.

(By the way, if you didn’t realize that ASAE & The Center had online learning communities, they have several! Learn more here.)

The book club will happen within the PD community’s online space next Tuesday, March 20th, at noon. I’ll be on the other side of the world on that day, but I know several of my fellow Independent Thinkers will be participating.

Available at Amazon!

Not that it changes much, but you can now find our book at Amazon.com (the U.S. site that is; for some reason the Brits beat us to the punch and we’ve been available on AmazonUK for some time now). Of course it’s just as easy to order the book directly from Lulu, but we’re happy that a search for “always done it that way” on Amazon will now give you our book.

Entrepreneurs

Guy Kawasaki blogged about the book “Founders at Work” that has many stories from successful entrepreneurs. One of the main themes, he said, was right at the heart of our book, as evidenced by this quote from Steve Wosniak from Apple:

“All the best things I did at Apple came from (a) not having money, and (b) not having done it before, ever.”

There is something about the spirit of entrepreneurship that shouldn’t go away once an organization becomes established, but it often does.
